Point Park begins weekend with RSC victory over conference newcomer IUPUC

PITTSBURGH -- In the first-ever meeting with new River States Conference member IUPUC, Point Park University volleyball notched a 3-1 victory over the Crimson Pride on Friday night from the Student Center Gym. 

The Pioneers (5-14, 2-9 RSC) started off their home conference weekend with a win by scores of 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22 over IUPUC (5-10, 2-9 RSC). 

Point Park had three players with double-digit kills with Amanda Contois powering down 14 followed by Giulia Follador 12 and Marcella Erichsen 10.

The Pioneers had 54 kills in the four sets with Eden McElhaney pitching in seven and Haley Stormer (6) and Mariah Perez (4) combining for 10 from the middle. 

Point Park's setters contributed 23 assists and 11 digs from Ashlynn Gulakowski and 25 assists and eight digs from Elise Wallace

Point Park won the battle of the back row with 78 total digs compared to 65 for IUPUC. Many playeres got in on that act with McElhaney leading the way with 19. Three other players made double digits with Kenzie Zauner 13 and Lily Marchand 11 to match Gulakowski.

Other big points came from Perez's seven blocks and two service aces and Marchand with her three aces. 

IUPUC had Abigail Watson with 12 kills, Cora Baker with 11 and Madison Hunter with 10. Addson Lemon had 39 assists, but it wasn't enough. 

The first set was tied at 20-20 before a big kill from Contois and an ace from Perez put the Pioneers in front 23-20. McElhaney ended the set with two straight kills, 25-21. 

The second set was tied at 21-21. An ace by Marchand and a kill by McElhaney were keys to setting up set point, and McElhaney got the final kill again, 25-23. 

The Pioneers had a 5-0 run in the third to build a 13-10 lead. But a later deficit of 22-19 was too much to overcome as the Crimson Pride took the set, 25-22. 

In the fourth, Point Park again had a 13-10 lead, but the score became tied for the seventh time of the set at 22-22. Contois came up with a kill, and Perez served an ace to move to match point. Haley Stormer ended it with a kill. 

Point Park returns to action Saturday, Oct. 14 at 12:00 p.m. versus IU East for another RSC home match. The Red Wolves lead the RSC East Division at 17-6, 9-1 RSC.
