Women's Soccer Falls to Wheeling In MEC Opener

WHEELING, W.Va. – Point Park women's soccer dropped a 2-0 final against Wheeling University on Sunday afternoon during the Pioneers Mountain East Conference opener at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The game remained scoreless until the 40th minute, when Wheeling's Lily Hanna scored an unassisted goal just before the break. Nyah Smith made it 2-0 Cardinals in the 73rd minute with an assist from teammate Graceylyn Hanna.

Point Park finished the afternoon with seven shots, but just one required a save by the Cardinals' goalkeeper. Gillianne Stewardson led the Pioneers with two shots in the game.

Jamie Spurrell provided Point Park's best scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute, a shot that was turned away by Wheeling's Olivia Kqira in goal.

For the game, Wheeling held a 14-7 advantage in total shots, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals also held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

PPU's Maggie Pappas recorded eight saves in the complete game for the Pioneers in goal. Wheeling's Kqira turned away one shot and earned the shutout victory for the Cardinals.

MEC North play continues on Wednesday evening as Point Park travels to Frostburg State for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the preseason division favorites.
