PITTSBURGH – Point Park battled to a 1-1 draw against Carnegie Mellon on Thursday evening at the CMU Soccer Field. After a scoreless first half, both teams netted a goal in the second half before the game ended in a draw.
Point Park is now 0-1-1 on the year, while Carnegie Mellon moves to 2-0-2.
Sterre Kuijper scored the first goal of the season for Point Park to make it 1-0 Pioneers in the 59th minute. Kuijper rebounded a defensive header and scored on a one-time strike to the left side of the goal.
Less than three minutes later, Maria Drazenovic knotted the score on a header from just outside the 18. The CMU goal was assisted by Alana Frederick.
For the game, Carnegie Mellon outshot Point Park by a 15-2 margin, with both of Point Park's shots coming in the second half. CMU also had an 8-0 corner kick advantage.
Point Park once again split time in goal, with Maggie Pappas getting the start and making two saves in the first half. Frederieke Rijlaarsdam played the final 45 minutes and made two saves while giving up one goal.
The Pioneers begin conference play on Sunday with a road match at Wheeling University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Bishop Schmitt Stadium.
