PITTSBURGH -- It was a record-setting performance by Point Park University women's soccer for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Pioneers beat IUPUC, 15-0, in the final game of the regular season to propel them into the playoffs.
Point Park (10-4-4, 7-1-2 RSC) set school records for goals and assists in a game with 15 each and margin of victory. That goes back to the first year of the progam in 2005. Individually, Holly Pascoe tied her own school record for points in a game with 10 while fellow senior Chanell Britten scored eight points, tied for third-most in team history for a single game.
After concluding the 18 scheduled games in a big way, the Pioneers move on to the RSC Championship where they will be the No. 2 seed beginning Nov. 4 at home. Point Park will host No. 7 Midway (Ky.) University in the quarterfinals with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Cupples Stadium.
The Pioneers honored their 10 seniors prior to kickoff. That group included Ella Serlin, Holly Pascoe, Josie Valeri, Chanell Britten, Lorena Montanes, Amanda Scott, Lisa Schott, Skylar Eacker, Claire Campbell and Virginia Alvis. Five of those players scored points on Saturday.
Pascoe's single-game, record-tying 10 points included four goals and two assists. That matched her own record for points with five goals in game last year. She scored the final two goals of the first half to push the lead to 5-0 and then started the flurry of scoring in the second half with the first of 10 goals by the team.
Britten scored the first goal of the game in the eighth minute to open things up. She also assisted on the fifth goal as the Pioneers were in control just 28 minutes in. Britten picked up three assists in the second half to add up the points.
Anne Barbosa had a goal and two assists on the day with her tally making it 2-0 in the 17th minute off an assist from Pascoe. Montanes added to the seniors scoring with two goals and one in each half. Her first came at the 19:55 mark for a 3-0 lead.
All throughout the game, the Pioneers had brilliant passing to keep the goals coming. The first 15 minutes of the second half had two goals by Pascoe and one each by Montanes, Mireya Rojas, Britten and Paula Sole. That pushed the score to 11-0.
Madison Spencer scored the next two goals in the 65th and 79th minutes. Asha Mweene scored her first-career goal moments later on a running clock. Then Amanda Scott capped off the Senior Day festivities as the fifth senior to score a goal doing so in the final minutes.
Spencer had five points on the day with an assist to go along with her brace. Rojas and Sole each had a goal and an assist while Abigail Gnass had two assists, both as part of the 5-0 first half. Also picking up assists were senior Schot and Jurnee Durrett-Finney.
The Senior Day win pushed the Pioneers to the 10-win mark for the season. The program has won 20 games the past two years and registered double-digit wins in back to back years for the first time in seven years. Point Park went over 10 wins in 2014, 2015 and 2016, which included a school-record 12 wins in 2015.
Point Park is one of the eight teams that will battle it out for the RSC Championship crown Nov. 4-11. The winner will earn automatic qualification to the NAIA National Championship. For complete RSC postseson information, go to the link below.
