BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Point Park University women's basketball registered a key road win at WVU Tech, 89-55, on Saturday to remain in second place in the River States Conference East Division.
The Pioneers (16-5, 9-3 RSC) put five players in double digits to keep their spot in the standings with the divisional race heating up. Point Park remained ahead of third-place Ohio Christian (17-5, 8-3 RSC) and just behind Tuesday's home opponent, division leader No. 18-ranked Rio Grande (Ohio) (19-4, 12-0 RSC).
Point Park was ahead 20-12 after the first quarter. The Pioneers ran away with things starting with a 10-2 run to open the second. Gabriella Legister ignited that run with a basket and a foul shot to begin the period. The Chartiers Valley product and transfer from Kennessaw State (Ga.) already had a double-double by halftime and finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
The Pioneers were ahead, 44-22, at the half and kept the pedal down with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter. Alexis Giles drilled a 3-pointer to cap off that spurt.
Aichata Ballo scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished four assists for Point Park. She scored 14 of her points in the second half to lead the runaway effort. The Pioneers pushed the lead to 35 points at 59-24 midway through the third.
Giles with 11 points and 3 for 5 from the arc along with 11 each from Emma Pavelek and Gillian Piccolino made it four starters and five players overall in double figures for the Pioneers. Point Park had 11 players see action with nine of them scoring. Fatim Sarr Ndow with nine points and Isabella Pelaia with eight led the bench scoring.
Point Park shot 50 percent from the field and held the Golden Bears to 31 percent. The rebounding had Point Park lead, 48-35. Points in the paint were also a big factor with the Pioneers leading there, 56-26. Point Park's lead was as high as 36 in the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers have five games remaining in the regular season with all of those within the RSC East Division. Point Park plays each of the other five teams from here on out, which begins with a matchup with nationally ranked Rio Grande on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at home. Tipoff is 5:00 p.m. at CCAC-Allegheny.
