
Point Park falls in doubleheader versus Shawnee State; fall 7-0 and 6-5
KENNEDY TOWNSHIP., -- Point Park faced off with the number one team in the East Division, Shawnee State, where the Pioneers fell 7-0 in game one and lost a close second game 6-5.
Game 1:
In game one it was a close game as Shawnee only led 2-0 going into the top of the seventh until the Bears struck for five runs to put the Pioneers out of reach.
Shawnee State scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the top of the first as Cassie Berry hit a solo home run to left field to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Shawnee State scored six more runs between the sixth and seventh inning to get out to a 7-0 lead that the Pioneers were never able to overcome.
The Pioneers were only able to get four hits. Savannah Lee led the Pioneer offense going 2 for 2. Melanie Taylor and Sydnie Reese each had a hit to round out the Point Park hits.
Jaylyn Mullenax (11-9) went all 7.0 innings giving up 11 hits and seven runs with only two being earned. She struck out five in the effort.
Game 2:
Game two was a much closer game as the Pioneers held a 4-1 lead going into the fourth until Shawnee State had a five run fourth inning to put them ahead 6-4. Point Park ultimately ended up falling 6-5.
Shawnee State got the first run of the game on a Lexi Lockwood single to center field to score Sierra Dunnagan who had reached base on a single to center field.
Point Park had their biggest inning of the day as the Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Remi Koi and Melanie Taylor hit back-to-back singles to the outfield two puts two runners on for the Pioneers. Mia Arndt then was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Gianna Welsh.
Welsh then ripped a triple to the left field fence to clear the bases putting the Pioneers out front 3-1. Savannah Lee then hit a single to the shortstop to bring in Welsh and extend the lead to three.
Shawnee got back five runs in the fourth on an error and three hits which included two doubles and a two-run homerun.
Point Park got a run back in the fifth as Taylor led the inning off with a triple to left field and then scored on a ground out to the third basemen by Mara Iagnemma to cut the Shawnee State lead down to one.
The Pioneers had a chance to score in the bottom of the sixth but were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position.
Point Park then went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and give Shawnee State the 6-5 win.
Melanie Taylor led the Pioneer offense going 3 for 4 with two runs scored while Gianna Welsh went 1 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Savannah Lee went 1 for 3 with an RBI as well. Mara Iagnemma had the other RBI for the Pioneers.
Savannah Lee (9-10) went all 7.0 innings giving up eight hits and six runs in which five were earned.
Following the two losses the Pioneers fall to 20-20 overall and 13-15 in River States Conference play while Shawnee State moves to 31-7 overall and 21-7 in conference play.
Point Park will now travel to Ohio Christian on Thursday for their last road conference matchup. First pitch against the Trailblazers is scheduled for 3:00 pm ET.
