
Point Park sweeps Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in RSC doubleheader, win 5-1 and 2-1
KENNEDY TOWNSHIP., Pa.—Point Park earned their first River States Conference sweep of the year as they took both games over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Sunday. The Pioneers took game one with a score of 5-1 as Point Park pounded out 10 hits with three players getting multiple hits. In game two the Pioneers found themselves down 1-o in the bottom of the sixth until Gianna Welsh hit a two-run home run to put Point Park up 2-1 which they held onto the rest of the game.
Game 1:
Point Park scored five runs on 10 hits to overtake Alice Lloyd 5-1 in game one. Point Park's Jaylyn Mullenax was able to keep the Eagle's offense quiet as she only allowed three hits and one run which was unearned.
Point Park started the scoring out in the bottom of the first as Melanie Taylor led off with a double where she then advanced to third on an error by the catcher to get into scoring position.
Two batters later, Mia Arndt singled to center field to score Taylor making it 1-0 in favor of Point Park.
The Pioneers picked up their second run of the inning as Savannah Lee roped a two-out double down the right field line to score Arndt and extend the lead.
Alice Lloyd got a run back in the top of the third as Audrey Mowell started the inning off with a single to right field. Following a sacrifice bunt and a single to right field by Ellie Kenne, Mowell scored on an error by the shortstop after trying to catch Kenne stealing second, cutting the Pioneers lead to one.
Point Park earned that run back in the third as Arndt drew a walk and later scored on a single by Gianna Welsh that then got passed the center fielder to make the score 3-1.
The Pioneers picked up two more runs over the fourth and the fifth inning.
In the fourth inning Bella Magliocco started the inning off by reaching base on an error by the pitcher. Mackenzie Moore entered as the pinch runner for Magliocco where she went on to score on a Remi Koi single to center field.
The final run of the game for Point Park came in the bottom of the fifth. Welsh led the inning off with a single to right field. The Pioneers then put Raigan Chavez in to pinch run for Welsh. Chavez then stole second as well as third to get in scoring position. Chavez then took home on a wild pitch to make the final score 5-1 as Alice Lloyd was unable to score in the top of the seventh, giving the Pioneers the game one win.
Jaylyn Mullenax (8-8) pitched a complete game giving up only one run, which was unearned, on three hits. Mullenax picked up eight strikeouts in the win.
Three Pioneers picked up multiple hits. Gianna Welsh and Savannah Lee both went 2 for 3 and Melanie Taylor went 2 for 4.
Game 2:
Alice Lloyd carried a one-run lead going into the top bottom of the sixth until Gianna Welsh smashed a two-run home run over the left field fence to put the Pioneers up 2-1. Point Park held on and did not allow no more runs by the Eagles to get the 2-1 victory and the sweep over Alice Lloyd.
The Eagles started scoring right out the gate as Maleigh McDaniel roped a double to the center field fence to score Mackenzie Orfield who had reached base on an error by the first basemen.
This run held as the only run of the game as Savannah Lee and Kristen Vice were locked in a pitching duel until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mia Arndt reached base on a one-out single to third base to put a runner on for the Pioneers.
With Arndt on first, Gianna Welsh took a fastball up in the zone and crushed it over the left field fence to give Point Park a 2-1 lead that held for the rest of the game.
Point Park shut down the next three batters for the Eagles, securing the win for the Pioneers and earning them their first River States Conference sweep on the year.
Savannah Lee (7-8) pitched all 7.0 inning giving up only one run, unearned, on six hits.
Welsh and Arndt both went 2 for 3 with one run score while Welsh picked up two RBIs.
The Pioneers move to 15-17 overall and 7-12 in River States Conference play while Alice Lloyd falls to 14-23 overall and 3-19 in conference play.
Point Park has another doubleheader tomorrow as they will face IUPUC (Ind.) at Fairhaven Park. Game time has been moved to a 2:00 pm ET start.
