KENNEDY TOWNSHIP, Pa.—Point Park secured two wins over Carlow University on Wednesday for the non-conference sweep. In game one the Pioneer's offense exploded for 12 runs on 14 hits for one of their best offensive outings of the year. Point Park then followed that up with a 4-0 win in game two versus the Celtics to get themselves the sweep and move to 10-12 on the year.
Game 1:
In game one the Pioneer offense exploded for one of their most successful games of the year. Point Park got 12 runs on 14 hits with two of the hits being home runs for their first multi- home run game of the season.
Point Park started the scoring in the bottom of the first as Melanie Taylor was walked to start off the inning. Taylor then advanced to second on a stolen base.
Mara Iagnemma then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was overthrown by the pitcher, allowing Taylor to score for the first run of the game.
The Pioneer's offense did not let up as they piled on six more runs in the second inning. Bella Magliocco led the inning off with a double to right field where she was then moved over on a single by Hayley O'Neil.
With Magliocco on third and O'Neil on second following a stolen base, Remi Koi hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Magliocco to score and O'Neil to advance to third.
Taylor then got into the hit column with a single scoring O'Neil making the score 3-0.
Following the RBI single by Taylor, the Pioneers launched their first home run of the game. With no outs Iagnemma sent her first collegiate home run over the left field fence for a two-run shot to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Pioneers did not stop there. Savannah Lee reached base on an error by the shortstop which allowed Gianna Welsh to come to the plate with no outs.
Welsh then smashed a home run of her own over the left field fence as well for her own two-run home run, her second home run of the season, to extend the lead to 7-0.
Point Park piled on the runs as they scored five more in the third inning to put them out of reach as the lead extended to 12-0.
Following two singles by O'Neil and Koi as well as a walk by Taylor, the bases were loaded for Iagnemma. Iagnemma hit into a fielder's choice allowing O'Neil to score.
Lee then walked loading the bases again, this time for Welsh. Welsh ripped her second hit of the day, this time a double to score both Iagnemma and Koi.
Sydnie Reese then followed up Welsh double with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Lee.
Point Park's final run of the game came on a Mia Arndt single to score Welsh making the game 12-0.
Carlow managed to avoid a shutout as they scored one run in the top of the fourth on a Clara Niglio single that scored Fran Beighley.
Jaylyn Mullenax started in the circle and threw a complete game for the Pioneers only allowing four hits and one run which was earned. Mullenax moved to 4-7 on the year.
Eight of the nine Point Park hitters registered a hit in the game. Taylor, Welsh, Arndt, Magliocco, and O'Neil all had multiple hits. Welsh had four RBIs followed up by Iagnemma with three.
Game 2:
In game two the Pioneers went with an entirely different lineup that scored four runs on eight hits for the game two win over Carlow to secure the non-conference sweep.
The game remained scoreless up until the fifth inning where the Pioneers then piled on all four of their runs.
Peyton Haller started off the inning with a single followed up by a Mackenzie Moore walk.
With Mia Arndt pinch running for Haller, Raigan Chavez reached base on an error by the pitcher allowing Arndt to score making the game 1-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
Bre Pies then ripped a single to the outfield which scored Moore extending the lead to 2-0.
With only one-out in the inning, Kristyna Mala hit a double down the left field line to score both Chavez and Pies making it 4-0.
Unlike in game one, the Celtics were unable to erase the shutout, making the final score 4-0.
Savannah Lee got the win as she pitched all 7.0 innings for the Pioneers, allowing eight hits but no runs scored to move to 6-4 on the year.
With the sweep, Point Park moves to 10-12 overall on the year. Point Park will play again on Friday as they take on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in a River States Conference matchup at Fairhaven Park with first pitched scheduled for 3:00 pm ET.
