IU Southeast's offense overpowers Point Park, Pioneers fall 10-0 and 4-1
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – IU Southeast's offense proved to be too much for Point Park as the Grenadiers took both games of the River States Conference doubleheader on Saturday. In the first game IU Southeast scored 10 runs on 13 hits while shutting out the Pioneers to win 10-0 in six innings. In game two, Point Park's offense continued to struggle as they only managed to get two hits, with one being a homerun, where they then fell 4-1 to move to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in River States Conference play.
Game 1:
In game one both teams struggled to get any runners to cross the plate as the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning where IU Southeast put five runs up on the board to start their offensive push.
With Cassi Roman on third following a triple to center field, McKenzie Walters singled down the left field line to score Roman giving the Grenadiers their first run of the game.
The Grenadiers then got back-to-back hits from Brynlea Bennett and Autumn Oehlstrom. Bennett ripped a double to left center to score Walters while Oehlstrom singled to right field scoring Bennett making the score 3-0.
With two outs and Quinlynn Cunningham pinch running for Oehlstrom, Erin Templeman hit two-run homerun over the centerfield fence to extend the lead to 5-0.
IU Southeast then did the same damage to the Pioneers in the sixth inning. The Grenadiers tacked on five more runs to enact the mercy rule.
With Issy Wright and Autumn Oehlstrom on base following two singles, Erin Templeman went on to hit her second homerun of the day this time to left field to enact the mercy rule on the three-run shot. Templeman's homerun gave the Grenadiers a 10-0 win in six innings.
IU Southeast's Pitcher Maci Warner was credited with the win as she threw a complete game shutout while only allowing three hits and issuing one walk.
Jaylyn Mullenax started in the circle for Point Park and pitched 5.1 inning giving up 11 hits and seven runs in which all were earned. Mullenax was tagged with the loss in the effort.
Kristyna Mala came in to throw in the sixth inning and threw 0.1 innings of relief and allowed two hits and three runs in which all were earned.
Point Park's offense was only able to get three hits in the loss. Melanie Taylor, Mara Iagnemma and Remi Koi had the hits for the Pioneers.
Game 2:
Lack of offense was once again the downfall for Point Park in game two as they only managed two hits in the 4-1 loss to IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Autumn Oehlstrom drew a walk which was then followed up by an Erin Templeman single to right center to move Oehlstrom into scoring position.
With two-outs Macie Zink hit a single down the left field line to score Oehlstrom from third giving IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
IU Southeast tacked on another run in the second inning as McKenzie Walters singled to shortstop to score Cassi Roman who had reached base on a double to left field.
The Grenadiers added another run in the third off an Autumn Oehlstrom homerun to centerfield followed up by another run in the fifth on an Erin Templeman double to right center to score Oehlstrom who had reached base on a double.
Point Park's offense had been shut down most of the game as IU Southeast's pitcher Madison Wathen was throwing a scoreless one-hit game until the top of the seventh.
Following Wathen picking up her tenth and eleventh strikeout freshman Mia Arndt stepped up to the plate. Arndt then ripped a solo homerun over the left field fence to erase the shutout while earning herself her first collegiate homerun.
This was not enough for the Pioneers to overcome the deficit as the next batter hit into a groundout to the first basemen to end the game giving the Grenadiers the 4-1 win.
Savannah Lee was in the circle for Point Park where she pitched a complete game giving up nine hits and four runs in which all were earned.
Besides the homerun by Arndt in the bottom of the seventh the Pioneers picked only up one more hit in the effort with Kristyna Mala hitting a single to right center in the fifth inning.
Point Park plays another River States Conference doubleheader against Midway (Ky.), who is in the West side of the division, tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm ET.
