Point Park men win three events at Indiana Tech for Week 2 of indoor season

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Point Park University men's track and field won three events and made two NAIA national-qualifying marks at the Indiana Tech Warrior Open on Friday. It was the second week of the indoor season with the meet being held at the Doug Edgar Indoor Track Facility and hosted by the perennial NAIA national championship contender Indiana Tech programs.

Elijah James in the 600 meters and Kodi Quimby in the 3,000-meter race walk were the NAIA national qualifiers. Point Park's first-place event wins came from Ramiro Ulunque in the mile, Chevaughn Fletcher in the shot put and Collins Eze in the triple jump.

James, a junior from Pittsburgh, ran a time of 1:22.26 in the 600 meters to place second. After a conversion for track size, the time improved to 1:21.05 to get within the minimum NAIA national standard. The 600 meters also had Kanye Mills (1:25) and Toby Wright (1:26) in the top eight for Point Park.

Quimby, a freshman from Farmington, Maine, became Point Park's first-ever national qualifier in the race walk. His time of 15 minutes, 40.58 seconds is a school record and got within the NAIA standard by 40 seconds. He placed eighth in the combined men's and women's event on Friday.

Ulunque posted a career-best of 4:23.31 to win the mile. That was within 6 seconds of national qualifying.

Eze, already a national qualifier in the triple jump, won the event this week with a distance of 14.30 meters. Teammate Maxwell Goode came in fourth with a PR of 13.36 meters.

Fletcher won the shot put one week after winning the weight throw at YSU. He registered a distance of 14.92 meters in his first shot put of the year. David Attram placed ninth at 12.99 meters.

Akeem Mustapha placed third in the long jump. He qualified nationally last week under the NAIA 'B' standard but moved up to the NAIA 'A' standard this week with a leap of 7.14 meters. That is just one centimeter off the school record. Eze got another Top 10 placing seventh in the long jump at 6.93 meters.

Steve Bradley led the Pioneers in the 400 running 51.15 seconds for fourth place. Also in the top eight were Damir Lomax (51.76) in sixth and Juan Barrera (51.79) in eighth.

Kanye Mills made the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and placed eighth. His best time of the day came in the prelims at 8.57 seconds.

Damir Lomax represented in the finals of the 60 meters running 7.01 seconds to get there and place seventh.

Other track leaders were Luke McKenna sixth in the 3,000 meters at 9:22, Juan Barrera 11th in the 200 at 23.53 and Wesley Trower fifth in the 800 at 2:04.
