Men's Soccer Hosts Concord In First-Ever MEC Match on Sunday

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park men's soccer team will play its first-ever Mountain East Conference match on Sunday afternoon, hosting Concord University in a 2 p.m. matchup at Highmark Stadium.

The Pioneers come into Sunday's game with a 1-0-0 record following Thursday's 8-1 win over Chatham in non-conference action at Highmark Stadium. Concord will be playing its season opener on Sunday afternoon.

 

Point Park Storylines

- Point Park scored eight goals in Thursday's season-opening win over Chatham, which included six different goal scorers during the victory.

- Nils Benning and Javier Morejon led the Pioneers with two goals apiece in the game, while Fridolin Gerfoer passed out three assists.

- In addition to Benning and Morejon, Cheroky Briard, Ruben Kuypers, Dominic Thieler and Ian Thomas all scored goals in Point Park's win over Chatham.

- Point Park score five goals in the first half of Thursday's game, including four goals in the first 24 minutes of play.

- Statistically, Point Park held a 34-4 shots advantage and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks during the win.

- David Ali earned his first victory as the Point Park goalkeeper on Thursday, allowing one second-half goal and recording two saves in the lopsided win.

- Concord was voted third in the MEC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, which was announced on Aug. 29. The Mountain Lions return first team All-MEC defender Kai Forsyth and second team All-MEC forward Fabian Amhof this season.

- Following Sunday's home opener, Point Park will hit the road to take on the University of Charleston next Wednesday at 7 p.m. UC was the MEC Regular Season and Tournament Champions in 2023.
