Point Park Men's Golf wins W&J Rossin Invitational at Southpointe GC

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Point Park University men's golf stayed hot with another win earlier this week at the Washington & Jefferson Rossin Memorial Invitational held at at Southpointe Golf Club. The Pioneers placed first of eight teams at the very challenging layout beating runner-up W&J by 14 shots.

Point Park shot a team score of 309 with W&J's A & B teams coming in second and thrid at 323 and 328, respectively. Also in attendance were St. Vincent, Grove City, Geneva, La Roche and Thiel.

It's Point Park's second win of the 2023-24 season and the first one of the spring. The Pioneers have started out fourth at Alice Lloyd, third at UNOH and now have added a team victory to their resume to continue their upward climb.

Not only were the Pioneers at the top of the team leaderboard, they were also at the top individually. Troy Loughry and Anthony Santilli finished 1-2 for Point Park shooting 72 and 75.

The tough track of Southpointe had only five players under 80 with three of them coming from the Pioneers' squad. Tharcisse Kalinda joined that party with a 79 for fifth place.

Anthony Maltony shot 83 for 13th as the fourth Point Park score. Alex Zinz at 92 and Loris Vollant at 99 were other competitors for the Pioneers.

Loughry won his sixth tournament title in nine events this school year. He is undefeated this spring winning medalist at all three spring events so far, and he has won four in a row dating back to Westminster to conclude the fall.

Loughry's steady play at the championship-level course featured even-par 36 on each side for a total of 72. He had two birdies to balance out his two bogeys on the front. An eagle at the par-5 11th balanced out his holes coming in.

Santilli shot 1-under on the front 9 with an eagle at No. 5 and a single bogey. He birdied the 13th to highlight the back 9 and end a 3-over 75 for the day.

Kalinda totaled nine pars and a birdie to give the Pioneers three players in the 70s. Maltony also had nine birdies to key the team victory.

Point Park was scheduled to play at the Grove City Invitational in the later part of this past week. But that event was postponed due to rain for the second time. The Pioneers will instead have their next tournament be the Mercyhurst Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 13. The tournament will take place at Lake View Country Club in Erie, Pa.
