Point Park riding win streak into weekend after victories over Georgetown (Ky.)

Point Park University baseball is riding a five-game win streak into its weekend series at WVU Tech after stringing non-conference victories together earlier this week. The Pioneers (26-10, 14-4 RSC) have won 10 of their past 12 games to keep their record up.

Coming off their series victory at Ohio Christian last weekend -- which included big wins of 20-0 and 13-7 on the final day to take the series -- Point Park kept going with a shutout at Wilberforce (Ohio) last Sunday, 8-0, with dominant performances on both offense and defense.

The Pioneers kept the momentum going with a midweek sweep of Georgetown (Ky.) by scores of 8-6 and 4-1 at home. Point Park was able take both games from a fellow 20-win team in the Tigers (22-13).

Point Park now turns its focus to a weekend series at WVU Tech at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, W.Va. on Saturday-Sunday, April 13-14. The Golden Bears (20-17, 9-9 RSC) are in third place in the RSC East Division and are challenging for a top playoff spot.

Point Park leads the RSC East by 3.0 games over second-place Shawnee State (Ohio) (17-19, 11-7 RSC) with six games to play. The Pioneers could possibly win the division title with a good weekend and some help.

Here's a look back at the games earlier this week:

POINT PARK 8, WILBERFORCE 0

Joathan Rivera struck out 14 batters and got the victory in 7.0 innings of work as the Pioneers closed out the weekend road trip in Ohio. Rivera made quick work of the Bulldogs with just four hits and no runs allowed in his outing.

Rivera walked just one before handing things over to Logan Creamer and Jose Moreno for the eighth and ninth innings to combine on the shutout.

Point Park had 13 hits with Chris Williams 3 for 5 while Jared Campbell and Isaac Santana both going 2 for 5 with a homer.

Santana drove in three on the day, including a two-run homer in the first for an early lead. Crixtian Taveras added an RBI double in the fourth to pad the lead.

Campbell went deep in the fifth on a solo shot. Point Park strung together four RBI hits in the seventh to push the lead to 8-0. Those were base hits by Santana, Michali Brito and Gonzalez and a double by Williams.

Creamer worked a 1-2-3 eighth with two groundouts. Moreno struck out the side in the ninth to finish it off.

POINT PARK 8, GEORGETOWN 6

Point Park erased a 5-2 deficit and had the pitching to combine on a total team win in the opening game of the doubleheader versus Georgetown (Ky.).

The Pioneers came alive for five runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good, 7-5. Eddie Javier Jr. delivered a two-run double with the bases loaded to cut the score to 5-4. Jordon Campbell tied things up with a sacrifice fly before his brother Jared Campbell came through with a two-run single and the lead a few batters later.

Crixtian Taveras, who was 4 for 4 in the doubleheader and got on base all six trips on the day, homered in the fifth for an insurance run at 8-5.

Four Point Park pitchers teamed up to cover the 7.0 innings. Kenneth Rolon got the win in 3.1 shutout innings of relief. He allowed just four hits and let the defense work.

Jose Moreno came in for a couple of key outs to get out of the sixth. Javier Cardoso II pitched the seventh to earn the save. He worked around a base hit with two outs with a pop up to end it.

Point Park answered GC's three runs in the top of the first with two in the bottom half. Omar Morillo, who was 2 for 3 with two runs and a walk, came around to score on Chris Williams' sac fly. Luis Gonzalez later had an RBI double with two outs.

POINT PARK 4, GEORGETOWN 1

The Pioneers scored the final four runs to take the sweep of the doubleader. The Tigers got just a single run in the top of the first, but four Pioneers' pitchers kept them off the board the rest of the way.

Point Park strung together three hits in the third to go in front, 2-1. An infield hit by Crixtian Taveras and a double by Jared Campbell set the table. An RBI groundout by Isaac Santana -- his 49th RBI in 36 games -- tied the score. Michali Brito followed with a base hit for the lead.

Carlos Burroughs ignited the fourth with a lead-off double, which was followed by Eddie Javier Jr's single. Two walks and a wild pitch forced in the two runs.

Ethan Van Scoy worked the first 3.1 innings in a no-decision for the lefty from California. He struck out three and allowed one run on four hits.

Jose Moreno came in next with 1.2 innings with no runs. He struck out two, walked none and allowed two hits to improve to 3-0.

Ethan Parker in the sixth and Ramon Rodriguez in the seventh made it 3.2 scoreless for the bullpen. Rodriguez earned the save, his first of the year.
