Pioneers complete sweep at IUPUC, Torres surpasses 500 wins at Point Park
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Point Park University baseball won both games at IUPUC on Monday, 12-6 and 14-3, to complete the three-game, River States Conference sweep. With those victories, Pioneers head coach Loren Torres surpassed 500 wins at the school.
Torres, in his 15th season in charge of the program, is now 501-223 (.691) since taking over in the summer of 2009. In just 13 full seasons previous to this one and partway into his 15th season, Torres reached the milestone by leading the Pioneers to an average of 37 wins per year.
Monday's opening win of 12-6 had Point Park hit five home runs and saw four pitchers combine to strike out nine IUPUC hitters. Of Point Park's 15 hits, nine of them were for extra bases.
That offense led to an early advantage of 7-0 through three times at bat and built on with five more runs in the later innings after the Crimson Pride had cut things to 7-4 in the middle stages.
Chris Williams had a pair of hits, including a homer. Carlos Burroughs and Carlos Martinez each had a homer and two hits as well with Martinez scoring three times.
Michali Brito was 3 for 5 clubbing two doubles and driving in a run. Jared Campbell was 2 for 4 with double.
Eddie Javer Jr. pinch hit for a two-run homer in the eighth to help extend the lead. The final homer was by Luis Gonzalez.
John Hawley pitched 4.0 innings as the Pioneers' starter. He gave up only two earned runs on three hits during his outing and handed the 7-4 lead over to three bullpen arms.
Jose Moreno threw 2.0 scoreless with one hit and two strikeouts after that. Ethan Parker (2.0 IP) and Kenneth Rolon (1.0 IP) finished it off.
In the second game, Ramon Rodriguez struck out 12 in 5.0 innings of work to highlight the game for Point Park. The sophomore left-hander gave up only three runs and three hits and did not walk a batter.
IUPUC had a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score a 2-2. After that, Rodriguez racked up the strikeouts to mow down any chance of an outburst from the hosts.
The score was still 2-2 when the Pioneers came to bat in the top of the fourth. Martinez delivered an RBI double for the lead.
The Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the fifth with Williams and Gonzalez coming through with RBI singles. That made the score 6-3.
Point Park piled on five runs in the sixth highlighted by Jared Campbell's two-run homer. Three more came in the seventh for a 14-3 lead.
Moreno came on in the sixth to work another scoreless frame. Joathan Rivera pitched the final inning of the scheduled seven-inning nightcap striking out two.
The next scheduled game is Wednesday, March 13 at W&J with a 3 p.m. start. The Pioneers, who have won five straight to improve their record to 11-7, 5-1 RSC, welcome Midway (Ky.) for their next RSC series this coming weekend.
