Torres breaks wins record, Pioneers sweep Siena Heights

PITTSBURGH -- With a 7-1 victory over Siena Heights (Mich.) in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, Point Park University baseball head coach Loren Torres became the all-time wins leader in program history. It was the 444th victory under Torres, who is in his 13th season. The win passed Mark Jackson, who won 443 games in 12 seasons from 1984-90 and 1998-02.

Point Park then improved to 32-11 on the year with an 8-3 victory in the second game of the day. In between games, coach Torres was recognized for the record, and his two long-time assistants Rocky Capobianco and Bryan Neal were also honored. Capobianco, the associate head coach, is now the all-time leader in wins as part of the Point Park baseball coach staff with 457. Neal, the pitching coach, has the most wins combined as a player and a coach in team history with 568.

Tuesday's games wrapped up the home season for the Pioneers. Point Park goes on the road to close out the regular season this Friday-Saturday, April 29-30 at IU Kokomo. The three-game set finishes the RSC schedule. There is a doubleheader on Friday at 10 a.m. and a single game on Saturday at 5 p.m.

POINT PARK 7, SIENA HEIGHTS 1
Ed Pfluger was 4 for 4 with two home runs in his final game at Point Park Field to power the Pioneers to the opening win, the record-setter for coach Torres.

Point Park was down 1-0 before it even came to bat. But Pfluger tied the game on a two-out single in the bottom of the first. Point Park went ahead for good on Luis Hernadez's two-run single in the second. Hernandez stayed active with a steal of second, and on the same play, Jordon Campbell stole home on the back end of a first-and-third situation.

Hernandez was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. The third run he drove in came on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, which made the score 4-1. In the sixth, Pfluger smashed his second homer of the day, his last at bat on the home field.

The steady offensive was more than enough for the pitchers, who gave up just three hits in the game. Javier Cardoso went the first 5.0 innings to get the victory. He gave up just a single unearned run in the first on three hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Jose Moreno pitched the sixth inning retiring the Saints in order. Ramon Medina pitched a scoreless seventh facing four batters.

POINT PARK 8, SIENA HEIGHTS 3
The Pioneers were facing a 3-0 deficit after two innings, but they came alive for five runs in the bottom of the third to send them on the way to victory. After the eruption in the third, Point Park steadily added on with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Gianmarco Marcelletti's 11th homer of the year -- a two-run, towering bomb -- got the Pioneers on the board in the third. After walks to Ed Pfluger and Jordon Campbell, Carlos Sanchez tied the game at 3-3 on a base hit.

Ty Andrews later in the inning put the Pioneers ahead on a sacrifice fly, one of his two RBIs in the game. With two on and two outs, Omar Morillo sprayed a single to right field to drive in a run and cap off the inning with a 5-3 lead.

Carlos Burroughs delivered a clutch base hit in the fourth. Jared Campbell had led off with a double two batters earlier. Hernandez picked up his third RBI on a groundout in the fifth, and Andrews got his second RBI on a single in the sixth. Jordon Campbell's double set up the last opportunity.

Pitching was in good hands again with Kenneth Rolon (3.0 IP) and John Hawley (4.0 IP) combining on the outing. Rolon gave up all three of his runs in the third, although he put up zeroes in the first and third.

Hawley pitched the final 4.0 innings giving up just one hit and no runs to earn the win. He struck out two and walked none. He retired the last nine batters of the game to make quick work down the stretch. Hawley started his outing setting the Saints down in order in the fourth.
